Nov 5, 2000

PULLMAN, Wash.-- The Washington State University women's swim team defeated San Jose State University at Gibb Pool Saturday by a score of 176 to 85.

The Cougars moved to 5-1 this season by winning eight out of the 12 individual events, and nine out of 14 events in all. Eight different swimmers recorded the eight individual wins for WSU. The meet was also highlighted by seven additions to WSU's all-time top ten times lists.

"With this win, our talent and depth is beginning to show," WSU head coach Rocco Aceto said. "We have been training aggressively, and now we are learning to compete aggressively."

Taryn Ternent, a freshman from Edenvale, South Africa, won the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.19, moving her into third place on WSU's all-time list for that event. Ternent also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team.

Freshman Katie Byrnes (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:07.12, to become the seventh fastest Cougar ever in that event. Byrnes also moved into 10th place on the schools' all-time list in the 400 individual medley by swimming a time of 4:40.17.

Rachel Dong, a freshman from Paramount, Calif., won the 100 breaststroke, placed second in the 100 butterfly, and helped lead the 200 medley relay team to victory. Dong's time of 1:06.97 in the 100 breast moved her into eighth place on the Cougar all-time list for that event, and her 100 fly time of 57.83 made her the fourth fastest in school history.

Other event winners include Rebecca Cohen (Portland, Ore.) in the 200 freestyle, Melissa Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) in the 200 butterfly, Lindsay Henahan (Rochester, N.Y.) in the 50 freestyle, Christina Sanson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) in the 100 freestyle, and Andree-Anne LeRoy (Nanaimo, B.C., Canada) in the 200 breaststroke.
