Dara Torres broke Amy Van Dyken's US record in the women's 50m freestyle on Sunday at the Santa Clara Invitational swim meet in a time of 24.73. The previous record was 24.87 which Van Dyken set at the Atlanta Olympics in her gold medal winning race. Van Dyken was second in yesterday race with a time of 25.41. The third place spot was a tie between Ashley Tappin and Keiko Price who both finished in a time of 25.93.
The world record in the womens 50 free of 24.39 was set earleir this month on June 11 by Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands at the Brazilian Winter Championships meet in Rio de Janiero.
