Virginia Swimming Teams Sign 12 To National Letters Of Intent

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia head men's and women's swimming coach Mark Bernardino has announced the signing of 12 swimmers to national letters of intent to attend the University of Virginia and swim for the Cavaliers. Seven men's swimmers have committed to Virginia, while five women's swimmers signed letters of intent to enroll at Virginia for the 2000-01 academic year.

Virginia men's swimming signees are:

  • Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School)
  • Jonathon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland)
  • Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School)
  • Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville)
  • Adam Orton (Reston, Va./South Lakes)
  • Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena)
  • Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit)

The five UVa women's signings are:

  • Katherine "Quinn" Amesbury (Vienna, Va./James Madison)
  • Amy Baly (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School)
  • Jenna Bridges (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School)
  • Carlie Dykehouse (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep)
  • Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon)

Luke Anderson is one of two UVa signees from the Bolles School in Charlottesville. Anderson swims the sprint freestyle events and was a 2000 Southeast Junior National Champion in the 100 free and a Junior National finalist in the 100 and 200 free in the summer of 1999. He is a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier as well. Anderson is a Scholastic All-American and a National Honor Society member at Bolles. He is also a member of the Dean's List. His personal best times are: 50 free (20.64); 100 free (44.74); and 200 free (1:38.72).

Jonathon Haag, from Ashland, Ohio, swims sprint free events as well as the 100 backstroke and is one of the top three sprint freestyle recruits in the country. Haag, who swims for the Mansfield YMCA, is a YMCA National Champion in the 100 free. He is also a Scholastic All-American. Haag's personal best times are: 50 free (20.43); 100 free (44.8); 200 free (1:41.02); and 100 back (51.1).

Adam Kerpelman is a sprint freestyler who is new to the sport of swimming as he is only in his second year of year-round swimming. Kerpelman from Lutherville, Md., swims for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. His personal best times are: 50 free (20.8); and 100 free (46.24); and 200 free (1:41.36).

Gary Marshall, from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, swims the breaststroke and IM. He is a 2000 Southeast Junior National Champion in the 200 breaststroke and is a Senior Nationals and Olympic Trials qualifier. He broke Virginia's Ed Moses' Junior National record in the 200 breast. Marshall swims for Phillips 66 and his personal best times include: 100 breast (55.85); 200 breast (1:59.18); and 200 IM (1:51.63).

Adam Orton, from Reston, Va., swims the butterfly and backstroke. He was the 1999 Southeast Junior National Champion in the 100 fly and was also named the Washington Post Swimmer of the Year in 1999. Orton is also a Senior Nationals qualifier. He is a National Honor Society member at South Lakes. He also swims for Herndon Aquatics Club. Orton's personal best times include: 100 fly (49.3); 100 back (49.8); 200 back (1:49.36); and 200 IM (1:57.47).

Ian Prichard is a middle distance freestyler from Ventura, California. He is a Scholastic All-American and a California State High School Champion in the 200 and 500 free. A member of the National Junior team, Prichard is a former Junior National Champion in the 400 free. He is a Senior Nationals finalist in the 400, 800 and 1500 free, as well as an Olympic Trials qualifier. Prichard swims for the Buenaventura Swim Club, and his personal best times include: 200 free (1:37.8); 500 free (4:19.3); 1000 free (8:58.2); and 400 IM (3:59.6).

Luke Wagner is a multi-event performer from Greenwood, Colorado. He will swim the backstroke, free and IM at UVa. Wagner is a Junior National Champion and a Senior Nationals scorer. He is a three-time State Champion and a member of the National Honor Society. Wagner, who swims for the Greenwood Athletic Club, has qualified for the Olympic Trials. His personal best times include: 100 back (49.4); 200 back (1:45.0); 100 fly (49.3); and 200 IM (1:49.7).

Quinn Amesbury, from Vienna, Va., is the first of five women's swimmers to sign a national letter of intent with Virginia. Amesbury swims the 100 and 200 backstroke and was a Junior National finalist in the 200 back. She is a Senior Nationals qualifier as well. Amesbury, who swims for Curl Burke Swim Club, is a High Honors student at James Madison High and earned first-team All-Met accolades. Her best times include: 100 back (57.2); and 200 back (2:02.30).

Amy Baly is a distance freestyle and IM swimmer from Atlanta, Georgia. She is a Junior National Champion in the 800 free and 400 IM, as well as a Senior Nationals finalist. Baly, who qualified to compete in the Olympic Trials, is a four-time Georgia State Champion. She is a member of the National and Spanish Honor Societies. Baly, who swims for Dynamo Club, has personal best times that include: 400M free (4:19.77); 800M free (8:49.9); 1500M free (16:56.14); and 400M IM (4:54.52).

Jenna Bridges, from Jacksonville, Fla., is the second UVa swimming recruit from the Bolles School. She swims sprint freestyle and butterfly events and will have an immediate impact on the Virginia swimming program. Bridges is the Florida State runner-up in the 200 free and is a Scholastic All-American. She was a U.S. Open finalist and a Senior Nationals scorer as well. Bridges is also an Olympic Trials qualifier. She is a National Honor Society member and Dean's List student at Bolles. Her personal best times include: 50 free (23.5); 100 free (50.7); 200 free (1:48.34); 100 fly (55.8); and 200 IM (2:03.8).

Carlie Dykehouse is a middle distance freestyle and butterfly swimmer from Trinity Prep in Orlando, Fla. Dykehouse is a former high school teammate of current Cavalier Mirjana Bosevska. She is a Senior Nationals scorer and an Olympic Trials qualifier. Dykehouse is a member of the 2000 National Junior team, and swims for the Trinity Aquatic Club. She is an Academic All-American from Winter Park, Fla. Her personal best times include: 200 free (1:49.9); 500 free (4:54.1); 100 fly (55.8); and 200 fly (2:01.2).

Cynthia Roller, from Herndon, Va., swims the sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Roller is a Senior Nationals qualifier and a Junior National finalist. She swims for Curl Burke. Roller's personal best times include: 100 fly (55.93); 50 free (23.9).
