Scientist Suspended For Importing Drugs

Apr 27, 2000

A scientist who works at the New South Wales Academy of Sport, which is an Olympic training center, has been given a temporary suspension while police and customs officials investigate him for trying to import illegal performance enhancing drugs from the US.

The drugs had been ordered via the internet and were sent by mail. Australian customs has been stepping up its effort to monitor suspect parcels carrying drugs that are coming by mail.

The intercepted parcel contained DHEA and androstenedione. Both are drugs that are banned by the IOC and are used by athletes to improve muscle mass.

While these drugs are not normally available in Australia, they are sold as over the counter drugs in the US.
