Ruiz Squeeks By For Victory

Apr 22, 2000

A narrow margin of victory would be a good way to describe Mark Ruiz's win last night in the 3-meter springboard event at the U.S. National Indoor Diving Championships taking place in Minneapolis.

Ruiz scored two - 8.5's and two - 8.0's on a reverse 3 1/2 summersault with a one-half twist tuck. It gave him a score of 650 points, just enough to squeek by David Pichler who had a score of 649.26 points. Bryan Gillooly was third with 642.15 points.
Ruiz had earlier considered withdrawing from the event because of a pulled groin muscle.

In the other events Sara Reiling was the winner in the 3 meter competition with 499.83 points. Ashley Culpepper was second with 493.14 points and Jenny Keim was third with 487.05 points.

Lane Bassham and Lauryn McCalley won the women's 3 meter synchronized diving with a score of score 286.20 points.

Kathy Pesek and Tracy Bonner were second with 282.96 points while Sunday Lewandowski and Erin Quinn were third with 268.89 points.
