Athens Organizers Given Warning by Samaranch

Apr 21, 2000

Head of the IOC Juan Antonio Samaranch gave the 2004 Athens Games organizers a warning that they are seriously concerned about the structure of the Greek Olympic organisation and its ability to deal with important issues that are causing concern. These include problems with accommodation, venue construction and transportation.

He was quoted at a conference by Associated Press as saying that, "There are three phases with organisation. The green light is that all is going well, the yellow that the Games has many problems and the red light that the Games are in danger," Samaranch told them that, "We are at the end of the yellow phase. If from now until the end of the year there are not drastic changes, we will enter the red phase."
