More Bodysuit Controversy

Apr 17, 2000

U.S. Swimming's national team director, Dennis Pursley was quoted last week in a Radio interview in Australia as saying that he was not in favour of the new bodysuits.

Because the suits are custom made, he question whether Speedo would have enough of them ready in time for all swimmers to wear and whether this would pose an unfair advantage to those wearing them.

In contrast to this Australian head coach Don Talbot has made it clear he would not have a problem with swimmers wearing the suits at the Australian trials which are less than a month off.

Although the Australian Olympic Committee has asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a ruling on the use of the new suits, Australian Swimming president Terry Gathercole has stated that Australian Swimming would follow the FINA rules and allow the use of the suits at their trials.

The suits have already been used by Australian swimmers at several meets in the past few months.
