UVA Wins Close Meet Over North Carolina 158-142

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The eighth-ranked University of Virginia women's swimming and diving team won the 400 freestyle relay, final event of the meet, to clinch a 158-142 victory over 17th-ranked North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus. UVa won nine of the first 10 events and 11 of 16 overall. With the win, the Cavaliers extend their dual-meet winning streak to 18, and improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC this season.

The Virginia foursome of fourth-years Emily Trakas (Herndon, Va./Herndon), Emily Carrig (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman), Rebecca Cronk (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and third-year Megan Iffland (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) turned in a season-best time of 3:26.41 in winning the 400 free relay that clinched the UVa victory.

In addition to swimming a leg on the winning 400 free relay, Iffland swam the leadoff leg on Virginia's winning 200 medley relay (1:44.03) and also won the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Iffland won the 100 back in a time of 55.88 seconds and posted a winning time of 2:02.15 in the 200 back. Cronk was also a double individual event winner and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay. Cronk was victorious in the 50 and 100 freestyle with times of 23.64 and 51.78 seconds, respectively.

First-years Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) were double winners for the Cavaliers. Lane set the UVa school record in winning the 1000 free with a time of 9:44.29. The former record of 9:51.30 was set by Nicole Rutkowski in 1995. Lane also triumphed in the 200 butterfly by posting a time of 2:00.10. She was third in the 100 fly with a time of 56.80 seconds as well. Bosevska touched in 1:51.17 to win the 200 freestyle and also won the 500 free in 4:52.49. She was third in the 200 individual medley (2:03.55) as well.

Fourth-year Kori Forster (New Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) and second-year Kate Slonaker (Summit, N.J./Oak Knoll) also swam legs on the 'Hoos winning 200 medley relay team. Third-year Courtney Colbert (Brown Deer, Wisc./Rufus King) rounded out the Cavaliers' individual winners as she took the one-meter diving competition with 253.65 points. First-year Alison Sharp (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) finished second with 237.45 points. Sharp was also second on the three-meter board with 272.69 points, while Colbert was third on the three-meter board with 253.94 points.

The Virginia women's swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, January 29 when it hosts Villanova at 1:00 p.m. at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
