More Records Fall At The British Championships

Jul 11, 1999

Alison Sheppard just beat Sue Rolph by 3/100ths of a second to win the 50 freestyle in a time os 25.47. This time also gives Alison the British and Commonwealth Records. The previous Commonwealth record of 25.49 was held by Leah Martindale (BAR), while the British record of 25.54 was held by the second place finisher in the race, Sue Rolph, who set the record just over a month ago in this same pool.

James Hickman improved his British 100 fly record twice in one day. First in the prelims with a 52.97 and then in the finals with a time of 52.87. His previous record was 53.23 set back in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympic Games.

Martin Harris set a British record in the 50 backstroke with a time of 26.00.

Amanda Loots picks up a win in the 100 butterfly and a second African record with her time of 1:00.77, bettering the old record of 1:01.43 set by Renate du Plessis earlier this year in South Africa. Renate du Plessis was 4th in the event with a time of 1:02.62.
