Zoe Baker Sets European Breaststroke Record

Jul 10, 1999

Zoe Baker set a European Record in the 50m breaststroke (pending ratification) at the British Champpionships taking place in Sheffield, Great Britain. Her time of 31.52 was done in the prelims on the first day of the championships. In the finals she managed a 31.61. The swim broke the previous record of 31.58 held by Silke Horner of the former GDR (German Doping Republic). Horner had set the 50 breaststroke record as a split in the 100m event at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

Amanda Loots of South Africa set two South African National and Continental records in the 400m Individual Medley and 200m Butterfly events. Her time of 4:48.97 in the 400 IM took 2.97 seconds off a record she set in Durban in January.

In the 200 Butterfly her time of 2:12.63 which earned her 2nd place in the race, also took .90 seconds off her National and Continental record.
