Coaches Honoured By ASCA and USA Swimming

Richard Quick of Stanford was chosen as the American Swimming Coaches Association, Coach of the Year, based on the winning performance of the Stanford team at the NCAA's and the performances of Jenny Thompson at World Championships and U.S. Nationals.

Buck Dawson was awarded the 'Bob Ousley Award' for his lifetime contributions to American Swimming. Buck was the founder of the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale.

Frank Busch, who placed nine swimmers on international teams this summer, was named the 1998 Coach of the Year by USA Swimming.

Ray Mitchell was recognized as the 1998 Developmental Coach of the Year, after having seven swimmers, ages 17 and under, qualify for the 2000 Olympic Trials. Both men will be recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee at a dinner in Houston on Sept. 19 and by USA Swimming at its annual convention in Cincinnati on Oct. 2.

Busch, who is originally from Cincinnati, coaches at the University of Arizona in Tucson and Hillenbrand Aquatics, the 1998 national women's and combined team champions. Mitchell of Concord, Calif., is the head coach of the Terrapins Swim Team, which features rising star Natalie Coughlin.
