Records Tumble On First Day Of Paris World Cup
Mar 28, 1998
PARIS - World and European records were bettered on the first night of the 9th FINA World Cup for 1998.
Mark Warnecke, GER, tied his own world record in the men's 50 metres breaststroke with 26.97. It is the second time he has tied the record during this season's world cup series. He first tied it in January in Sydney, AUS, competing in the first competition in the series. He established the record of 26.97 in February of 1997.
James Hickman, GBR, established a new world record in the 200 metres butterfly with 1:51.76, bettering the existing record of 1:52.64 by Denis Pankratov, RUS, from February of 1997.
Andrei Korneev, RUS, shaved 1/100th of second of the existing world record in the men's 200 metres breaststroke with 2:07.79. The old record was 2:07.80 by Phil Rogers, AUS from 1993.
Brigite Becue, BEL, bettered her own European record in the women's 100 metres breaststroke with 1:06.87, she had set the record with a 1:07.02 in Sydney, AUS, at the first stage of the 1998 world cup.
All men's times are also European records.
All times are pending as both FINA and LEN require negative drug tests in order for records to be recognized.
