Marsh and Bowen Awarded By Knoxville News-Sentinel

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Knoxville News-Sentinel recently announced its Men's and Women's All-SEC Swim Team, which included Auburn head coach David Marsh as Men's Coach of the Year and AU swimmer Maggie Bowen as the Women's Swimmer of the Year.

The Tigers placed five men's swimmers and two women's swimmers on the first team while 21 swimmers and divers from Auburn were named to either the first team, second team or honorable mention.

On the men's side for Auburn for the first team were Greg Busse (freestyle), Kevin Clements (distance free), Andy Haidinyak (butterfly), Jeff Somensatto (butterfly) and Dave Denniston (breaststroke).

For the women, Bowen received first team honors for the butterfly and individual medley while freshman Eileen Coparropa picked up first team honors for sprint freestyle.

Second team honors for the men went to Bryce Hunt in the backstroke, Justin Caron in the breast and Jon Karr for the medley relay. The women placed diver Ashley Rubenstein on the second team and Cortnee Adams, Taylor Spivey and Demerae Christianson were honored for the medley relay.

Honorable mention honorees for the men are James Galloway for distance free, Pat Calhoun for breaststroke and Brandon Roberts and Richard Long for the free relay. The women placed Magda Dyszkiewicz (distance free), Laura Swander (breaststroke) and Heather Kemp (free relay) on the honorable mention team.

The News-Sentinel All-SEC Swim Team is voted on by SEC coaches which have voted Marsh as the top men's coach in five seasons (1993, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2001) and the top women's coach in two (1992, 1993).

This season, Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle was named the top women's coach while Michael Gilliam of Tennessee was named the Men's Swimmer of the Year. Gabi Chereches of Tennessee was Men's Diver of the Year and Jamie Watkins of LSU was the Women's Diver of the Year.
