Touretski Makes Brief Appearance In Court

Apr 12, 2001  - Sandy McLean

Australian swimming coach Gennadi Touretski's few seconds in a Canberra, Australian, court today amounted to nothing more than the case being remanded until May 3, he did, however, speak for the first time to a Russian newspaper declaring his swimmers clean.

In Moscow's Sports Express newspaper, Touretski was quoted as saying, "I do not think anybody with common sense can doubt that my athletes are clean. Their stable performance over a very long period is self-evident."

Touretski was charged Monday with the illegal possession of an anabolic steroid after Stanozolol was allegedly found in a safe stolen from his home and dumped in a shallow pond, but he has maintained his innocence.

Since then the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) swim team has been concerned about the fallout of the drug charge on their reputation and have declared themselves to be clean.

"I am worried about the moral damage already done to myself and my athletes," Tourestski was reported as saying in the Russian sports daily.

Touretski has been suspended with full pay from his coaching duties by the AIS pending the outcome of the case.

The drug allegedly found in the stolen safe is a steroid that has fallen out of favor years ago because of the ease in which it is detected.

The Australian Sport Drug Agency has announced it will be testing the AIS swim team members by the weekend.
