Canadian Nationals Day Five

Mar 18, 2001  - Quinn Phillips

Young blood filled the pool in Edmonton this week as new comers, led by Tobias Oriwol, Jennifer Fratesi, Andrew Hurd and many of Canada's young up and coming stars took over the national podium.

Fifteen year-old Oriwol from Etobicoke and 16-year-old Sault Ste. Marie's Fratesi won the 200-metre backstrokes, while Hurd, 18, won the inaugural men's 800-metre freestyle and tied for the gold in the 400 free.

Six Canadian records went down over the five days of competition. Morgan Knabe broke the men's 50-metre breaststroke twice, Jennifer Carroll smashed the women's 50 backstroke twice, and Moose Jaw's Mike Mintenko broke his own record in 50 fly twice.

On the last night of competition St. Albert's Morgan Knabe completed the sweep in the breaststroke events, winning the 50 M, 100 M and 200 M. The women's 100 M breaststroke event saw Victoria's Christin Petelski win the event, qualifying to represent Canada in Japan.

Canada's Olympic Individual Medley veterans Marianne Limpert and Curtis Myden again proved their dominance by winning the 200 IM's and qualifying for the Worlds team.

Along with crowning 40 national champions, this meet qualified 15 swimmers for the World Aquatic Championships to be held July 22-29 Fukuoka, Japan.
