IPC Vows To Crackdown On Ineligible Athletes

Mar 13, 2001

The International Paralympic Committee is vowing to crackdown on athletes' eligibility for the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, after recent investigations proved that two-thirds of the athletes registration forms for intellectually disabled athletes used in Sydney were invalid.

Many teams had placed athletes on teams that had no mental handicaps whatsoever. Spains' mens gold medal winning basketball team has already had to return its medals and now many other medal victories are being put into question.

The IPC has already suspended the membership of the International Sports Federation for Athletes with an Intellectual Disability and they are working to prepare a new eligibility process. The IPC found the assessment and certification of intellectually disabled athletes for the Paralympic Games in Sydney to be inadequate.

In the meantime the IPC is asking member nations to re-examine the staus of all their athletes who competed in Sydney.
