Rio World Cup Round Cancelled

Sep 17, 2009  - Craig Lord

The Brazilian round of the FINA-Arena World Cup scheduled for Oct 23-25 in Rio de Janeiro has been cancelled. The move comes at an awkward time for Brazil at it attempts to persuade the IOC that Rio has the money and capacity to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

The venues and dates for the 2009  Cup are now as follows:

  • Durban (RSA)  16-17 Oct

  • (Rio de Janeiro (BRA) 23-25 Oct - cancelled)

  • Moscow (RUS)  06-07 Nov

  • Stockholm (SWE)  10-11 Nov

  • Berlin (GER)  14-15 Nov

  • Singapore (SIN)  21-22 Nov

There will be no Rio replacement meet.

In previous years Brazil has staged the world cup in Belo Horizonte, the geography of which, and the expense of travel to get there, contributed to the South American leg of the series being poorly attended.
