Stanford Takes Home 20th Straight Pac-10 Title

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 2 Stanford Cardinal amassed 844.5 points to capture their 20th consecutive Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championship on the third and final day of the 2001 Men's Pac-10 Championships. The runner-up was No. 8 Southern California with 722.5 points. The No. 5 California Golden Bears with 540.5 points, moved up one spot from day two and finished third, followed by the No. 7 Arizona Wildcats with 538 points in fourth place. Arizona State (360.5 points), ranked No. 13, and No. 25 Washington (190 points) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

California sophomore, Anthony Ervin, broke another Pac-10 meet record today in the 100 free, swimming to the time of 42.21. Placing second in the event was Cardinal freshman Bobby O'Bryan (43.59).

In the mile (1650), Southern California sophomore Erik Vendt repeated as champion with a qualifying time of 14:56.80. Fellow Trojan, freshman Klete Keller, was the runner-up touching the wall in a time of 15:01.39.

Stanford swept the first, second and third places in the 200 back with freshmen Markus Rogan (1:42.58) and Peter Marshall (1:43.47) and sophomore Randall Bal (1:44.25).

USC senior Ryosuke Imai captured the Pac-10 title in the 200 breast swimming to the time of 1:57.68. Cardinal freshman Michael Bruce grabbed second place as he posted a 1:57.96.

Earning the Pac-10 title in the 200 fly with a time of 1:44.04 was Stanford senior Adam Messner. His teammate, senior Steven Brown was a close second with a time of 1:44.24.

In the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, California (juniors Matt Macedo and Maciej Burny, freshman Karel Novy and Ervin) pulled ahead of Stanford (Messner, O'Bryan, junior Jeff Guyman and freshman Andrew Schnell) in the last leg of the event to win with a time of 2:53.48.
