Indiana Sits in Third at the Big Ten Championship

Feb 17, 2001

Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana is still in striking distance after day two of the Big Ten Championship. The Hoosiers sit in third place with 315 points as they look for their best finish at the championship since 1982. Penn State leads the pack with 413 points followed by Michigan with 403 points.

"Tomorrow is the toughest morning by far. They know that and they're exhausted, so we'll come in ready to go. These meets are won in the morning," said head coach Dorsey Tierney.

Just as Jenn Cristy provided the spark for the Hoosiers on day one, junior Susan Woessner led the way on day two. She opened the meet by swimming the first leg of the 200-yard medley relay and setting the tone for a record breaking performance. Woessner, Megan Geers, Colleen McCracken and Cristy placed second in the event with a school record and NCAA provisional time of 1:41.98.

"We just came out the same as last night. We said how bad do we want it. There were two girls who hadn't made NCAA's yet and we said Susan and I are going to carry you but you have to want it, and they did," Cristy said.

Woessner then earned a trip of her own to NCAA Championship when she placed second in the 100 backstroke with an automatic qualifying time of 54.31. Her preliminary time of 54.27 was yet another IU record.

"I did the best I could. This whole weekend has been so exciting. We've had great team enthusiasm. Going into NCAA's I just want to improve my time and try to finish in the top 16," Woessner said.

Sophomores Kristy Martin and Maggie Helmers gave Indiana two top eight finishers in the 400 yard individual medley. Martin placed sixth with a personal best time of 4:21.42 while Helmers was eighth with a time of 4:23.56. Earlier in the day Helmers set the school record in the event with a 4:21.02 NCAA provisional qualifying time in the prelims. Her previous best time was 4:23.41. Martin's previous best was 4:29.62.

"Nothing is a surprise anymore," commented Tireney. "That group of 400 IMers worked harder than any other group. I won't say it was a complete surprise that their times fell, but I didn't expect then to fall by that much."

Sophomore Megan Geers joined the record breaking party as she placed 10th in the 100 yard breaststroke in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.63.

Cristy set her third and fourth school record of the meet in the 800-yard medley relay. She swam the first leg in 1:48.54, leading her team to a school record 7:21.66 finish. The Hoosiers placed sixth in the event. Wisconsin claimed first in 7:16.18, a Big Ten meet and Counsilman pool record.

Indiana placed five divers in the top 16. Junior Erin Quinn led the way with a ninth place finish (443.15) followed by sophomore Jennifer Sonneborn who finished 11th (428.35. Freshman Cassandra Cardinell placed 12th (418.10) while sophomores Mamie Goodson and Jessica Williams tied for 16th with 404.55 points.

Event winners from day two included Penn State in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.31), Michigan's Jennifer Crissman in the 100-yard breaststroke (53.99), Wisconsin's Emily Pisula in the 400 yard IM (4:15.20) and Ellen Stronebraker in the 200 yard freestyle (1:47.10), Penn State's Corrie Clark in the 100 yard butterfly (54.42) and Kristen Woodring in the 100 yard breaststroke (59.77).
