Arizona Defeats Arizona State

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Arizona State this afternoon. The No. 7 Arizona men scored 181 points to No. 14 ASU's 119 points. On the women's side the No. 2 Wildcats defeated the No. 17 Sun Devils 182-113. The meet was held on the University of Arizona campus at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

The Arizona men's team captured first place in 10 events. Junior Roland Schoeman placed first in three individual events. Schoeman swam to the time of 19.69 in the 50 free, a new pool record. He won the 100 free (44.04) and the 100 fly (48.99). Senior Tyler Painter also finished first in three events. The 1000 free (9:24.08), the 500 free (4:27.74) and the 400 IM (3:58.24). Sophomore Jeff Dash placed first in the 200 fly, touching the wall at 1:48.69. Winning the 200 back was junior Kris Souther (1:48.77) while freshman Greg Owen placed first in the 200 breast (2:02.70).

The men's 400 free relay team, made up of senior Scott Gaskins, freshman Eric la Fleur, senior Jay Schryver and Schoeman, took first place with the time of 2:58.76.

The Arizona women's team placed first in 12 of the 14 events. The women captured first in both the 400 medley relay (3:44.63) and the 400 free relay (3:28.45). The medley relay team consisted of sophomores Beth Botsford and Amanda Beard and juniors Erin Vogt and Jenny Vanker. The free relay team was made up of juniors Caroline Kilian, Michelle Engelsman, Amy Bouta and Beard.

Individually for the Wildcat women Botsford and Beard both placed first in three events. Botsford won the 100 back (56.31), the 200 back (2:15.18) and the 100 fly (56.11). While Beard took first place in the 100 breast (1:03.27), the 200 breast (2:15.18) and the 400 IM (4:27.08). Junior Sarah Tolar won two events for the Cats, the 1000 free (10:01.83) and the 200 free (1:49.06). Engelsman and Vanker each won individual events as well. Engelsman touched the wall in the time of 23.66 to capture the 50 free. Vanker won the 100 free in the time of 51.50.

In men's diving junior Omar Ojeda broke two school records. He scored 415.88 points on the one meter to place first and 402.03 points on the three meter to again place first. Junior Ruben Vaca placed second on the three meter with 372.08 points and third on the one meter with 388.88 points. Freshman Alex Vollelunga placed third on the three meter with 350.63 points.

In women's diving senior Adrian David broke the school record on the one meter scoring 348.45 points. David placed third on the three meter scoring 326.03 points. Freshman Claire Febvay placed first on the three meter with 342.15 points and second on the one meter with 319.88 points. Senior Lindsay Berryman scored 304.05 points on the one meter to finish in third place.

The Wildcat women will next travel to Seattle, Wash., to compete in the women's Pac-10 championships from Feb. 22-24. The Arizona men will travel to Long Beach, Calif., for the men's Pac-10 championships from March 1-3. The diving team will travel to Seattle for the Zone E diving championships from March 9-10.
