Connecticut Women Win, Men Lose Against West Virginia

Feb 5, 2001

STORRS, Conn. - It was an emotional atmosphere, as the University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted its last dual meet of the regular season against BIG EAST rival West Virginia. The women would defeat the Mountaineers, 180.50-105.50, while the men lost a close one, 151-143, Saturday afternoon at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium in Storrs.

Most of those emotions were tied into Senior Day at the Husky venue, where 10 senior swimmers were honored prior to the meet. Karri Charpentier (Leominster, Mass.), Tim Grimes (Leominster, Mass.), Barry Hoey (Dublin, Ireland), Shelley Jackson (Milford, N.H.), Liz Klink (Mt. Arlington, N.J.), Erin Moran (Cheshire, Conn.), Dana Pinther (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) Debbie Repass (Enfield, Conn.), Dagny Runyan (Fort Sheridan, Ill.) and Rachel Schwartz (Middletown, N.J.) competed in their last home dual meet.

The Husky women would jump out to a substantial lead after opening the meet with a 200-yard medley relay win behind a time of 1 minute, 49.19 seconds from Connecticut's top relay team of Pinther, sophomore Kate Larson (Sayville, N.Y.), junior Claudia Milani (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Schwartz.

The biggest highlight of the day came courtesy of freshman Dustin Rogers (West Allis, Wis.) who was a triple winner of the meet. Rogers turned in BIG EAST qualifying times and lifetime bests in the 200 freestyle (1:41.74), 100 butterfly (51.71) and 200 Individual Medley (1:55.90). He even anchored the Huskies' 200 freestyle relay team, which was the final race that determined the final score on the men's side.

Connecticut's divers also provided crucial numbers to the board. Sophomore Melissa Kull (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) eclipsed a five-year-old pool and school record in the one-meter diving event, scoring 295.58 points. Sophomore Kevin McKinney (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and freshman Chase Dunlap (Canandaigua, N.Y.) each won an event title to pace the Husky men to the close finish against West Virginia.

"Overall, it was a great meet and we swam much better than last week (against Syracuse)," UConn coach Bob Goldberg said. "It was the best meet of the year, besides the Villanova win for the men, and the women continue to be solid. We are beginning to taper and its starting to show."

The UConn women improve to 8-3, while the men go to 5-5. Connecticut will next host the two-day Husky Invitational on Feb. 9 and 10 at the Wolff- Zackin Natatorium in Storrs. Boston College, UMass, Providence and Clark University make up the field of competition. Friday's competition begins at 7 p.m., while Saturday's event lineup begins at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
