Swimmers Of The Week In The NCAA

ACC Conference
Summer Mack - Sr. - North Carolina Ian Prichard - Fr. - Virginia North Carolina's Summer Mack and Virginia's Ian Prichard have garnered the ACC Swimmer of the Week honors after leading their respective teams to wins over ACC op-ponents last week.

The No. 9 Tar Heel women dominated No. 16 Maryland, winning 203- 96, while the No. 11 Cavalier men topped Duke, 162-118.

Mack, a senior from Satellite Beach, Fla., won two individual events for the Tar Heels and also swam a leg on both of North Carolina's victorious relay teams. Mack won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.56 seconds and also won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.71. She swam the butterfly leg on UNC's 200- yard medley relay team, which swam a sea-son- best time of 1:42.73. Mack also swam a leg on UNC's 400-yard freestyle relay team, which won in 2:35.73.

Prichard, a freshman from Ventura, Ca-lif., set ACC, school and pool records in win-ning the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:02.90 in the Cavaliers' win over Duke. His time was nearly two seconds faster than the previous record, set by UVa's Austin Ramirez in 1998. Prichard also finished third in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:06.91.

This is the second Swimmer of the Week honor for both Mack and Prichard. Mack won the award October 23, while Prichard won the award November 13.


MAC Conference
Eastern Michigan's Mark Bevington was named Swimming & Diving Student-Athlete of the Week. Mark Bevington qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships with a score of 311.55 in the one-meter dive. Bevington's mark was a career-best for him.

Ohio's van Selm Named MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week Ohio's Kim van Selm named Women's Swimmer of the Week placed first in the 200 Free (1:52.55), 500 Free (5:01.12), and in the 1000 Free (10:15.90) against Miami and Bowling Green. The 1000 Free was a new conference best for this year.


SEC Conference
Kentucky senior Melissa Olson named SEC Womens Athlete Of The Week. Olson broke the 14-year-old pool record at Cincinnati in the 400IM as she led Kentucky as her Wildcats defeated the Bearcats 131-109. Her time of 4:23.43 in the 400IM gave her the win in that event and was the season-best time as well. Her second place time in the 500 free was a season best as well.

Auburn University junior swimmer James Galloway, a native of Montgomery, Texas, was named the SEC Mens Athlete of the Week for swimming and diving by the SEC office Wednesday.

Galloway, an All-American in 2000, earned the SEC Athlete of the Week honors after taking first place in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events at South Carolina last weekend while setting his career-best time in the 200 free (1:39.56).

The pre-dental major helped the Tigers to a 172-123 victory over the Gamecocks last weekend and a 7-1 overall record on the season in dual meets. At Auburn this year, Galloway holds the top times in the 500 and 1650-yard free events while accumulating three top ten spots in the SEC (200, 500, 1650 free).


MWC Conference
UNLV juniors Jacint Simon and Lucas Richmond have been named Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively.

Against Air Force Jan. 27, Simon swam to a pair of first-place finishes. In the 500-yard freestyle, he finished at 4:34.85. He also swam to his second best time of the season at 9:30.47 in the 1000-yard freestyle. The native of Kecskemet, Hungary, currently holds the runner-up spot in both events in the conference this season. The Rebels are ranked No. 26 in the nation.

Richmond, the sole UNLV diver of the week award winner this season, earned a first-place and second-place award against Air Force Jan. 27. On the 1-meter springboard, the Ft. Collins, Colo., native posted a score of 246.45, good for first-place. On the 3-meter, he finished second with a score of 198.82.

San Diego State freshman Megan Storey and Air Force Academy sophomore Sarah Law have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively.

In the Aztec's win over Pepperdine Jan. 24, Storey earned a pair of first-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.53 and in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:28.43. Against UNLV Jan. 27, she posted faster times in both the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle with times of 5:08.89 and 10:24.18, respectively, to earn a pair of second-place finishes. The Edmonds, Wash., native has won the 500 free in five of her last six competitions and currently holds the top spot in the conference in the 1000 free. Storey is a first time swimmer of the week award winner and the only Aztec to earn the honor this season.

Law continues to dominate the board, earning diver of the week honors for the fifth time this season. In dual matches against Denver, Jan. 24, and UNLV, Jan. 27, Law swept both the 1- and 3-meter springboard competitions. At Denver, she earned a score of 262.95 on the 1-meter and 270.68 on the 3-meter. Three days later the Parker, Colo., native posted a score of 230.40 on the 1-meter and 272.70 on the 3-meter board.


ECAC Conference
Senior Eleanor Thoet (Bath, ME) was named the ECAC Division I Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Julie Van Deusen (Bear, DE) was selected as the ECAC Division I Diver of the Week for their performances in Syracuse
