Nebraska Knocks Off Missouri In Final Two Events

Feb 1, 2001

COLUMBIA, Mo.- Both the Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams gave themselves a chance to win on Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb. Both meets came down to the final two races, but the Nebraska Cornhuskers had too much as they held off both Mizzou squads. Nebraska knocked off the Missouri women by a score of 130-112. The Husker men held off the Tigers, 134-109.

For the second straight day, diver KRISTY WANNER led the Missouri women. The senior entered the meet with a streak of three straight meets in sweeping both the one-meter and three-meter boards. Wanner made it four straight as she beat Nebraska in both events on Saturday.

"It was just another great weekend for Kristy," Head Coach BRIAN HOFFER said. "She is really performing well right now. Hopefully she can keep it going as we head to the conference meet."

Freshman SARAH LO won the 100 backstroke for the second straight night for the Tigers. Lo posted a time of 56.90 seconds, the second straight night she has gotten under the 57-second barrier.

Missouri got a solid performance from its' 200 freestyle relay team. The team of KIM LAMBERT, CHRISSY FRIEH, ANDREA NIGH and ELLEN CROSS posted a very good time of 1:37.50.

"This was a challenging weekend for the women," Hoffer said. "I thought we swam well, and the mental challenge of being on the road in two different places in two days should really help us heading into conference in two weeks."

Sophomore MATT FERRARELLI kept up his winning ways on Saturday for the men's team. Ferrarelli won both the 200 individual medley (1:50.78) and the 100 backstroke (50.80). With just one more dual meet remaining, Ferrarelli has failed to win just one dual race this season.

Seniors AARON LO and MIKE CERVENKA turned in fast times in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle respectively. Lo won the 50 free in a time of 20.89 seconds. Cervenka, for the third straight time, got under 1 minute, 40 seconds and won the 200 free (1:39.99).

Sophomore STEPHEN DURLEY may have had a breakout meet for the Tigers. Durley won the 1000 freestyle turning his fastest time of the year, 9:33.61.

The Missouri men also took care of business on the diving boards. Both JASON OTTE and JAMIE SWEENEY came out winners. Otte won the one-meter event with a score of 275.10. Sweeney was phenomenal on the three-meter board with a huge score of 324.52.

The Mizzou men had Nebraska on the ropes early, but the turning may have been in the 100 butterfly. Nebraska's Anthony Regis just barely out touched Missouri's RADU MICLAUS to get the win. Regis' time was 49.96 to Miclaus' 49.98.

"It's a tough loss, but I really like the way the men are swimming right now," Hoffer said. "We are competing at a very high level right now. We need to keep the intensity going into conference."
