Indiana Defeated By Penn State

Jan 31, 2001

After Indiana's emotional win over Purdue last week, Boilermaker coach Cathy Wright-Eger commented that meets are won by taking the second, third and fourth places. Penn State capitalized on the theory defeating Indiana 207-163 Saturday. Each school posted seven wins on the final day of competition, but it was the Nittany Lions that packed in the middle places. Penn State also defeated Michigan State 278-91.

After closing the first day of competition with two wins, the Hoosiers struggled early on taking third in the 200 medley relay. Tina Gretlund re-energized the Hoosiers with her 400 IM win in 4:26.53, but Penn State reacted by taking first through fourth in the 100-yard fly.

Kristy Martin set three season best times last week at Purdue and continued the trend by swimming the 400 IM in 4:31.70 against Penn State and Michigan State. Her new season best placed her third.

Jenn Cristy and Sarah Fiden responded in the 200 -yard free to take first and third in 1:52.25 and 1:53.83, respectively. Again, Penn State reacted claiming first through fourth in the 100-yard breast, and Indiana followed through win the next win. Susan Woessner won the 100-yard back in 56.71, but Penn State took places three through five.

The 800-yard free relay followed, but the Hoosiers again fell to the Nittany Lions. Indiana finished second in 7:39.83 to Penn State's time of 7:35.25. Woessner then won the 200-yard back in 2:03.37, and Cristy took the 100-yard free win in 50.91. Anne Williams' third place finish in the 100 free in 52.30 helped the score, but Indiana would place only one person in the next two events. Gretlund won the 200-yard fly in a season best 2:02.51. The Hoosiers again closed the meet on a high in winning the 400 free relay in 3:27, but Penn State drew on the talent pool and placed second, third, and fourth.

In diving, Jennifer Sonneborn again finished on top for Indiana, claiming fourth on the three-meter board with 269.77 points. Cassandra Cardinell and Mamie Goodson followed in fourth and fifth.

February 15-17, Indiana hosts the Big Ten championships. Preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals beginning at 7 p.m. will be held in Counsilman and Billingsley Aquatics Center.
