Men's - Michael Gilliam, Tennessee
Gilliam was named Most Valuable Swimmer as Tennessee won the Dallas Morning
news classic for the first time since 1997. Gilliam won the championship
finals in the 100 back and 100 free and also won the consolation final in
the 50 free. He also participated in the victorious 200 free relay and 400
medley relay and the runner-up 400 free relay as the Vols totaled 344
points. Gilliam currently holds the nation's fastest 100 backstroke at
47.72.
Women's - Anne Poleska, Alabama
Freshman Anne Poleska, in only her second meet since joining the Crimson
Tide at the semester break, smashed the school and Alabama Aquatic Center
record in the 200 breaststroke, lowering them by two and three seconds
respectively. Her time of 2:11.72 is an NCAA automatic qualifier and is the
fast is the SEC so far during the 2000-2001 season. On the weekend, she also
helped lead the Crimson Tide to a pair of wins over Florida State and
Clemson.
