Jan 26, 2001

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State men's swimmer John Retrum (Anderson, Ind.) has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, conference officials announced today. Retrum won the honor after leading the Lions to a 1-1 record last weekend in a tri-meet versus conference foes Purdue and Michigan.

The senior posted a pair of first-place finishes as he posted a time of 1:48.23 in winning the 200 backstroke. He followed that with a win in the 200 freestyle in a career-best time of 1:37.53, which also marked the third-fastest time in Penn State history.

Retrum also anchored the Nittany Lions' first-place 400 freestyle relay team that finished with a time of 2:59.23.

Retrum's selection marks the second Nittany Lion to be honored by the conference this season. Diver Chris Alderman (Arlington, Va.) was previously honored by the conference for the week ending January 7.

The Penn State men's swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, February 3 when it travels to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes at 1:00 p.m.
