Ashley Roby Named SEC Athlete of the Week

ATHENS, Ga.- Univeristy of Georgia swimmer Ashley Roby was named the Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office on Thursday.

Roby, a junior from Lithonia, Ga., paced the Lady Bulldogs with three-first place finishes to help Georgia avenge its only loss during the last four season in a 168-130 win at Southern Methodist on Jan. 12.

Roby finished first in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events, clocking in at 1:02.52 and 2:14.23, respectively. She also touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:02.98.

The junior has automatically qualifed for the 2001 NCAA Championships in both breaststroke events and holds Georgia's top time of the season in the 100-yard breast. She is a provisional qualifier in the 200-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 2:01.50.

The men's swimming and diving team will be back in action Friday, Jan. 19, as the men host instate rival Georgia Tech in the final home meet of the season. Competition begins at 3 p.m. Both teams will return to SEC competition on Jan. 20, as they travel to Baton Rouge for a meet against LSU.
