CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson swimming and diving teams were defeated by ACC rival and nationally-ranked North Carolina this afternoon at McHugh Natatorium. The women's team fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the ACC while the men's team fell to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

The seventh-ranked North Carolina women's team (5-1, 2-0 ACC) won nine of the 13 contested events and set two pool records to capture the 153-90 victory over the Tigers. Erika Acuff set a pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.23, breaking the record set in 1980 by former UNC swimmer Gayle Hegel. Katie Hathaway set the other pool record for the Tar Heels with a time of 2:16.88 in the 200 breast, breaking the old record set by Alabama's Katherine Rhodes in 1993. For Clemson, Kate Walker won the 200 back in 2:04.82. Emily Hustead won the 500 free in 5:02.21 and Betsy Potter won the three meter diving event with a score of 277.35. The 400 free relay team of Leslie Anderson, Caroline Peterson, Patty Hider and Nina Douglas won that event with a time of 3:30.33.

The 14th-ranked Tar Heel men's team (4-1, 2-0 ACC) won 11 of 13 events and set a pool record to defeat the Tigers 164-79. The North Carolina 200 medley relay team posted a time of 1:32.07 to break the record set by Clemson's relay team in 1999. Will Rogers was a dual winner for Clemson, claiming the 50 free (21.04) and the 100 free (46.92).

The Clemson men's team will travel to Alabama next Saturday, Jan. 20, before hosting North Carolina State on Jan. 27 in their final home meet of the season. The meet against N.C. State is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at McHugh Natatorium.
