Wyoming Fairs Well with Arizona and Missouri

Jan 11, 2001

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up the new year with very successful outings, at the Sun Devil Invitational and a dual meet with the University of Missouri, this past weekend in Tempe, Ariz.

Both men's and women's team placed first in the Sun Devil Invitational. The Cowboys finishing with 102 points in the five team event, while the Cowgirls scored 111 points over the other two teams. In their dual with the University of Missouri, the men won by a score of 125-117 and the women by a 145-98 total.

Sophomore Mabry Fiddler was the big winner on the women's side capturing three events on the day. Fiddler took honors in the 500 Freestyle (5:08.71), 200 IM (2:10.98), and the 1650 Freestyle (17:39.94). Wendy O'Connell also completed a sweep in the one-meter and three-meter with scores of 227.33 and 236.93 respectively.

Several other Cowgirl swimmers turned in some good performances on the day. Freshman Crystal Mecham came away with a victory in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:25.88. Angie Sax and Allison Schmid also had first place finishes in the 200 Butterfly (2:06.86) and 200 Freestyle (1:56.66).

"It was a great meet for the women, with excellent performances by Wendy O'Connell in winning the one-meter and three-meter and Mabry Fiddler taking three events," said head swimming and diving coach Tom Johnson. "The kids swam extremely well after coming off ten days of extreme hard training. We're happy with their performances and we just need to keep this ball rolling. Also, I'm extremely pleased with beating a Big 12 team, I can't remember the last time that has happened, so it's a great win for our program. Missouri is a very talented and deep team, but our kids stepped up and swam well."

Oscar Delgado and Damion Storz had big days for the men's team. Delgado swept both the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 267.08 and 284.4 respectively. Storz pulled out first place victories in the 500 Freestyle (4:40.89) and 1650 Freestyle (16:18.81).

Other strong performances by the Cowboys included second place finishes by Jake Weidert in the 200 Butterfly (1:53.54) and Jason Garmon in the 50 Freestyle (21.65)

"On the men side, it was an extremely close meet throughout, especially after we false started in the very first relay of the meet. The men regained the lead after Oscar Delgado won both of his events, but the disqualification ate up much of that lead. Damion Storz also had a nice meet winning two events and was just edged out in another. But, the men really stepped it up after the early disqualification and just kept after it. This was a good test for us heading into conference next week against a good Big 12 opponent."

Both squad will open up the conference season this week. They will have a dual meet with the University of Utah on Friday night, and then close out the weekend against Brigham Young on Saturday afternoon.
