Jan 9, 2001

The University of Notre Dame women's swimming and diving team (7-1) earned a dual meet victory over Iowa 163-73 at Iolani High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, Saturday, Jan. 6. The 16th-ranked Irish are in Hawaii for training during the holiday school break and added the meet while preparing for the Rainbow Invitational, beginning Jan. 8.

A Notre Dame swimmer or relay team won 12 out of the 14 events versus the Hawkeyes, led by triple-event winner Amy Deger (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and double-event winners junior Kelly Hecking (Rutherford, NJ) and freshman Danielle Hulick (Galesburg, Ill.).

Deger had some outstanding races, sweeping through the 50 and 100 butterfly in 26.18 and 58.79, respectively. She also captured first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.54), joining Hulick as the two swimmers in the meet to win back-to-back events.

Hecking continued her season-long backstroke dominance, capturing the 100 back in 58.48 and the 50 back in 27.65. Hulick finished first in the 50 (24.11) and 100 freestyle (52.70).

Other event winners for the Irish were freshman Marie Labosky (Churchville, Pa.) in the 200 freestyle, junior Allison Lloyd (Fort Wayne, Ind.) in the 100 breaststroke and sophomore Lindsay Moorhead (Carefree, Ariz.) in the 500 freestyle.

The Irish will return to the midwest to continue the dual meet season after the Rainbow Invitational. On Jan. 12, Notre Dame will take on #13 Michigan, Oakland and Illinois during a quad meet in Ann Arbor, Mich.
