
Mireia Belmonte and Aschwin Wildeboer were declared swimmers of the meet as the Spanish s/c Championships drew to a close today in Madrid. They won 9 gold medals each.
Belmonte took the 200m butterfly, all three medleys (taking the 200 in 2:08.00 today), and played a part in all winning five relays (4x50s and 4x100s and 4x200 free) for her club, Sabadell.
Wildeboer celebrated a clean sweep of all backstroke events, won the 100m free and shared gold in all five relays for Sabadell.
No surprise then to find the Barcelona club win the meet, their efforts ending on high today when the women's 4x100m medley quartet set a national record of 4:00.16, courtesy of Lydia Morant, Conchi Badillo, Judit Ignacio and Belmonte (on 54.34).
In other action on the last day, Rafa Muñoz (CN Navial) clocked 23:07 to win the 'fly dash; comeback trailer Alena Popchanka (FRA) took the women's equivalent in 27.44 to add to the joy of partner and Sabadell coach Fred Vergnoux; and Eduardo Solaeche (Real Canoe) took the 200IM in 1:58.21.
The last race of the meet, the women's 800m free, produced a championship record for Melanie Costa (CN La Salle Palma), her 8:14.95 victory keeping at bay 800m world s/c champion Erika Villaécija (CN Sant Andreu), on 8:25.79.
