British Short Course Championships Report Day 4

Dec 11, 2000  - Anita Lonsbrough

Alison Sheppard set herself up for the European Short Course Championships which get under way in Valencia, Spain, with two Commonwealth records on the final day of competition at the British Winter Championships.

The twenty eight year old Scot who now lives in Canada where she is coached by her husband Gary van der Meulen, shared the previous mark with Susan Rolph. In the semi final she shaved 0;21off the figures to make it her own. She achieved her time of 24.59 despite a very poor finiah.

A storming start put her well ahead of the field in the final. Rosalind Brett the 100m champion tried to claw her way back over second 25m. But Sheppard had enough in reserve to hang on coming home in 24.26.

Brett who has gained greatly from her Olympic experience where she swam the 4 x 100m freesyle, lowered Rolph's English mark with a swim of 24.77sec.
