Texas Men Place First; Women Finish In Third At Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, TX - The No.1 University of Texas men's swimming and diving team cruised to a first-place finish at the Texas Invitational posting a total of 751 points, held on Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Jamail Swim Center. Trailing the Longhorns were No. 7 California (563), No. 5 Arizona (554), No. 25 Wisconsin (493), No. 22 Harvard (398), No. 9 Michigan (321), No. 19 SMU (250), No. 12 Arizona State (210), TCU (149), Nebraska (131), No. 3 Stanford (89) and Kansas (39).

The Texas women's team also posted an outstanding showing, placing third with 501.50 points, behind winner No. 2 UCLA (553.50) and No. 3 Stanford (501.50). Following the Longhorns were No. 3 Arizona (495.50), No. 12 Wisconsin (398.50), No. 5 California (367), No. 13 Michigan (362), No. 15 SMU (290), Rice (152), No. 18 Minnesota (130), No. 16 Arizona State (128.50), TCU (71), Nebraska (47) and Harvard (2).

The Longhorn men not only won Saturday's 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays, but also captured Sunday's 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of senior Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky.), freshman Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine), junior Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Jamie Rauch (Houston, Texas) set a Texas Invitational record with a time of 2:55.34, breaking the old mark of 2:55.90.

Freshman Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) captured his first individual title of the meet in the 200 breaststroke and also set a new invitational record with a time of 1:58.33. The old mark of 1:58.50 was set by Nuk Sirisanont in 1996. Other strong contributions came from Dusing, who posted second-place honors in the 200 backstroke (1:45.43) and Hannan, who placed fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.11.

"This is a turning point for us," said men's head coach Eddie Reese. "It was a strong competition for us and gave the team a great test before the NCAA's. We definitely came away with some solid performances and this will really help in our training for the next couple months."
