Mar 24, 2012 - Craig Lord
Danish Open, day 3 finals:
The world has a new backstroke contender in the shape of 15-year-old Mie Ø. Nielsen, of Aalborg Svømmeklub: out in 29.15, the teenager crushed the Danish national senior record with a dominant 59.69 victory.
Nielsen clocked a lifetime best of 1:01.04 at the Olympic test event in London a couple of weeks back after a 1:01.73 best last year. Today she became the first Dane inside the minute, her effort shattering the 1:00.48 at which Louise Ornstedt had held the Danish mark since 2005.
With victory, Nielsen also entered the 2012 world top 5:
US Olympic trials will be held in late June.
In other events, 17-year-old Pernille Blume, Birkerød Svømmeklub, clocked 1:59.71 to get the better of Lotte Friis, Herlev Svømning, 1:59.76, in the 200m free, with Irish visitor Grainne Murphy third in 2:00.50.
