Duke Swimming & Diving Splits Dual Meet with East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Duke University women's swimming and diving team raised their record to 3-1 on the season with a 133-110 victory over East Carolina on Saturday, while the Duke men fell to 2-2 after a 134-108 loss to the Pirates.

In the women's meet, Duke captured nine of 13 events en route to their third victory of the season. The freshman duo of Lauren Cornet (Great Falls, Va.) and Lauren Hancock (Pendleton, S.C.) paced the Blue Devils to victory as they each captured three first place finishes.

Cornet won the 50-freestyle (24.13), 100-freestyle (53.50) and the 200-breaststroke (2:20.25) while Hancock captured the 1000-freestyle (10:22.08), 500-freestyle (5:06.19) and was part of the 400-freestyle relay team (3:36.78). Other top performers on the women's side was senior Kristy Guenther (Elm Grove, Wis.), who won the one-meter diving with a score of 214.2, freshman Amy Halligan (Atlanta, Ga.) who won the 200-butterfly (2:06.37), and freshman Amanda Davis (Tuscon, Ariz.), who claimed top honors in the three-meter diving (230.85).

On the men's side, freshman Doug Warner (Granby, Conn.) had an outstanding afternoon as he captured the the one-meter (207.825) and three-meter diving (200.85) titles. Junior Chris Fleizach (Eastchester, N.Y.) won the 200-butterfly (1:56.98) while sophomore Ryan Spoon (Potomac, Md.) won the 200-breaststroke (2:05.07) and freshman Conor O'Brien (Glencoe, Ill.) won the 50-freestyle (21.58). Fleizach, Spoon, O'Brien, and senior Jack Newhouse (Lake Forest, Ill.) also captured the 400-Medley Relay with a time of 3:27.72.

Duke returns to action on Friday, Dec. 29 when the Blue Devils travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to compete in Ocean Mile Christmas Traing from Dec.29-Jan. 8.
