Fact of the Day

Sep 8, 1999

"Me Tarzan, you Jane"
Champion swimmer Johnny Weissmuller's "Me Tarzan, you Jane" was NOT a line from Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan stories, and nor was it a line from the Tarzan movie scripts... So where did it come from?

It's a little known fact that "Me Tarzan, you Jane" was a quip made by Johnny Weissmuller to his co-star, Maureen O'Sullivan, one day in the movie studio parking lot. Seeing Maureen struggling to lift her heavy suitcase into the trunk of her car, Johnny laughingly uttered these now famous words as he effortlessly swooped up the case and tossed it into the car.

Enough cast and crew were around to hear his comment, and it struck everyone as so funny that the quip lives on to this day.

Note: Johnny Weissmuller, the actor, quipster, and five gold medal Olympic swimming star (1924 Amsterdam and 1928 Paris) died in January 1984.
