US Olympic Trials, Omaha, Day 7 Finals:

Women's 800m freestyle

Katie (from Kathleen) Ledecky turned 15 this spring. This evening she became the youngest member of the US Olympic squad in 8:19.78 after racing out ahead of 1500m world record holder and former world champion Kate Ziegler, on 8:21.87 for the second berth.

The only other woman to have cracked 8:20 this year is Olympic champion and world record holder Rebecca Adlington (GBR), who has done so three times no less and leads the rankings on 8:18.54.

Ledecky, coached by Yuri Suguiyama at Curl Burke, is just at the age of leaps and bounds: on a lifetime best of 8:36.05 ion August last year, she clocked 8:30.14 in February and then set a best of 8:25.85 in May on the way to trials.
