Nov 20, 2000

EDMONTON - After two days of competition Martina Morvacova (SVK) and Ed Moses (USA) were the undisputed stars of the third stage of the 2000-2001 FINA World Cup.

Two Acura automobiles were up for grabs at this competition which generated a great deal of excitement and fast times.

Moses already posted the fastest men's time yesterday in the 50 breaststroke but improved on that with his win in the 100 breaststroke with 59.60 worth 981 points giving him the top male performance over two days and the keys to a shiny black Acura.

Moravcova put on a virtuoso display over two days competing and winning six events. Her best performance was the 200 free in 1:56.39 worth 991. Her winning time in the 100 IM of 1:00.67 was the second best performance worth 989.

She had a busy week, competing and winning six events at World Cup 2 (Wednesday and Thursday) for a total of 12 wins in 5 days. She was also the top performer at World Cup 2.

Moravcova picked the silver-gray Acura as her reward for all the fine swimming. "It's my colour," Martina said. "I won two silvers at the Olympics."

The host country amassed the most medals with 39 (12-13-14) with Slovakia's Moravcova in second with six golds. Australia with a team of relatively inexperienced rookies had a total of 20 (5-8-7).

Spectator interest was good today with over 1,000 in attendance.

The future of this competition is up in the air.

FINA wants to reduce the number of swimming World Cups to eight from 10. The cost of staging this competition is escalating yearly (over Cdn $ 350,000 this year) but Edmonton wants to be a player and is looking for the magic formula to continue with this much needed Canadian stop on the circuit.
