Virginia Men Falls To Tennessee 136-107

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 12th-ranked University of Virginia men's swimming and diving team lost to seventh-ranked Tennessee 136-107 Friday afternoon (November 17) at the Student Aquatic Center in Knoxville. The Cavaliers are now 4-1 on the season with the loss snapping their dual-meet winning streak at 10. Tennessee improves to 5-0 on the season with the victory.

Virginia was able to muster wins in only five of the meet's 13 events with second-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) leading the way with a pair of victories. Yimsomruay won the 200-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 1:50.57 and he was also victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:04.84, which is his collegiate career best. Fourth-year Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) won the 1000-yard freestyle as he touched in 9:13.86 to lead a top-three UVa sweep. First-year Luke Wagner (Greenwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) clocked a time of 1:47.54 to win the 200-yard backstroke, while first-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) rounded out UVa's individual event winners as he took the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:26.56.

In addition to winning the 1000 free, Grimes placed third in the 500 free with a time of 4:30.10. Second-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) grabbed second place in the 1000 free (9:17.04), while second-year Mike Wheeler (Lisbon, Md./McDonough) was third in the 1000 with a time of 9:26.36. Fourth-year Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) posted a time of 1:49.63 in finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly, while second-year Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) was third in 1:49.68. First-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle as he touched in 46.07, while fourth-year Troy Johnson (St. George, Utah/Dixie) was third in 46.25.

Virginia also grabbed two second-place finishes in the relay events. In the 400-yard medley relay, the UVa foursome of second-year Brian Best (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), fourth-year Justin Capuco (Burtonsville, Md./Good Counsel), third-year Matt Lee (Munster, Ind./Munster) and first-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) recorded a time of 3:29.61 to take second place. Anderson, Haag, Johnson, and Wagner combined to clock a time of 3:03.55 to take second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Tennessee was led by Michael Gilliam, who won the 50 free (20.39), 100 free (44.66) and also swam the anchor leg of the Volunteers' winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

The next competition for the Virginia men's swimming and diving team is the Cavalier Classic, which will be held November 30-December 2 at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
