The 2004 and 2008 200m backstroke Olympic champion Kirsty Coventry (ZIM) has been elected  to the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as one of four new members.

Danka Bartekova from Slovakia (shooting), James Tomkins from Australia (rowing), and Tony Estanguet from France (canoe-kayak) were elected by their peers at the London 2012 Olympic Games for a term of eight years. "During this period, they will also serve as IOC members, bringing the athletes' voice to the heart of the Olympic Movement," the IOC said in a statement.

The election was held from 16 July to 8 August 2012 in the Olympic Village in London, the Olympic Sailing Village, the Olympic Rowing and Canoe Sprint Village as well as in the five cities hosting the football competitions in Britain.

Bartekova was elected with 2,295 votes, followed by Tomkins with 1,802 votes. Coventry received 1,797 votes and Estanguet 1,779.
