Kansas and SMSU Split Dual Meet

Nov 14, 2000

LAWRENCE, KAN. -- The Kansas women's swimming and diving squad posted better marks in every event during a dual meet against Southwest Missouri State on Friday night at KU's Robinson Natatorium. The Jayhawk women's team won, 140-92, while the KU men's club was defeated, 141-102.

Jayhawks Beth Schryer, Carrie Kirkham and Heidi Landherr each posted two individual women's event wins, as the top performer in each of the 13 events represented KU, as Kansas won the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Kirkham had a hand in three wins, as she also was a part of winning 400 medley relay squad in addition to capturing the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Kirkham won the 100 by a sizable margin with a time of 52.91, while the KU trio of Kirkham, Sarah Ross and Kristen Johnson dominated the 200, with Kirkham posting the winning time of 1:55.46.

The versatile Schryer captured KU's first individual event win of the evening, winning the 1000 freestyle by nearly ten seconds, hitting the wall in 10:29.30. The sophomore from Arvada, Colo., also won the 200 butterfly in 2:07.02, narrowly holding off teammate Maegen Himes. Landherr delivered wins in the 200 IM (2:11.45), as the top three finishers donned the Crimson and Blue, and the 200 backstroke, opening up a solid lead and holding on to win in 2:09.63.

Other Kansas individual event winners included Kim Waite in the 50 free (24.62), Rebecca McFall on the one-meter springboard (272.75), Ross in the 500 free (5:08.95), Kristi Misejka on the three-meter dive (275.25), and Kristen Johnson in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.14). This comes in addition to KU's wins in the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays.

"This win is a great stepping stone for us as we get ready to race in Minnesota next weekend," KU women's head coach Cathy Burgess said. "The team was excited to face a new team and we did very well. We had some season-best times and were able to have our swimmers gain experience in different events that they had been working on."

On the men's side of the ledger, sophomore Brian Soria continues to be a bright spot for the Jayhawks. The Sante Fe Springs, Calif., native swept the 500 and 100 freestyle races Friday night, as Soria has won a combined five of six dual meet races in those events this season. Soria trailed early in the 1000, but his steady stroke allowed him to take the lead from SMSU's Eric Bintner in the second 500 of the race, as Soria finished in 9:27.66, five seconds ahead of the competition. Soria and fellow Jayhawk Jon Reyes were in a three-way battle in the 500 free, as the KU duo and the Bears' Nathan Segura all finished within 1.01 seconds of each other. Soria captured the victory, hitting the wall in 4:38.36, with Reyes coming on strong to take third.

"Brian cut it a little close for comfort in his two races, but he's tough, has a real steady pace and has a knack for getting to the wall," Kansas men's head coach Doug Dickinson said.

Two other Jayhawks captured event wins in the meet, as seniors Chad Sunderland and Jason Carr came through for Kansas. Sunderland won the 200 breaststroke in exciting fashion, defeating the Bears' David Nielsen by just one-tenth of a second. Sunderland hit the wall in 2:08.19, with KU freshman Dustin Chalfant placing third buoyed by a strong opening 100 yards. Carr earned the honors in the 100 freestyle, using a strong final 50 yards to edge out a pair of SMSU swimmers, timing in at 47.09 seconds.

"Everyone on this team did something positive today and that's what we're going to focus on," Dickinson stated. "No one likes losing a dual meet, but I saw positive signs that we are progressing and will swim really well at the end of year. And ultimately, that is our goal - to swim well at the conference and NCAA meets."

The KU women's team will next travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the Minnesota Invitational from Nov. 17-19. The Jayhawk men's squad will look forward to a trip to Dickinson's alma mater, the University of Texas, as the squad will participate in the Texas Invitational from Dec. 1-3.
