Perruquet, Suguiyama Named Swimmers Of The Week

Nov 7, 2000

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina freshmen Jessi Perruquet and Yuri Suguiyama have earned ACC Swimmer of the Week honors after leading the Tar Heels to wins over ranked teams. The women's team topped the No. 9 Wolverines 207-163, while the men's team stunned No. 10 Minnesota 198.5-171.5. The meets took place on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4, in Koury Natatorium on the North Carolina campus.

North Carolina freshman Jessi Perruquet led the way as the Tar Heel women defeated Michigan for the third straight year. Perruquet, a native of Danville, Pa., blitzed the field in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in a time of 1:48.37. That time made her the third fastest 200-yard freestyler in UNC history. Perruquet also won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.02. She anchored the Tar Heels' 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relays to victories in the meet and fell just short in her final event as the anchor of the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the Tar Heels were edged out by just .59 of a second.

Freshman Yuri Suguiyama helped the Tar Heel men's team beat their first Top 10 ranked opponent since the in-season rankings by the CSCAA began in 1991. Suguiyama, a native Ijamsville, Md., broke the school record in the 1000-yard freestyle, stroking to victory in 9:09.59. That time was .23 of a second faster than the previous school record set by Yann deFabrique in 1995. Suguiyama's time was also over seven seconds faster than his previous personal best in the 1000 free. Suguiyama also won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:28.40. He also swam the leadoff leg on Carolina's victorious 800-yard freestyle relay team and the anchor leg on the 400-yard freestyle relay team, which took second place.
