Berens Takes Down US 200 Yards Standard

Mar 7, 2013

Ricky Berens set an American s/c 200 yards freestyle record in a time trial during a 500y race at the 2013 ST TXLA American Short Course Championships tonight in Austin, Texas.

Berens clocked 1:31.31 (21.43, 44.80, 1:08.06) before swimming down for the rest of the race and fading to last. His 200y split took down Longhorn David Walters' 2009 record of 1:31.72 from a time when shiny suits were ripping in all the wrong places and the bottom line was the faint of girls and fame beyond the lane for Berens on the way to a return to the Olympic podium for the US at London 2012 four years after 4x200m victory with teammates in Beijing.

Berens came close to the all-time fastest 200y free, Britain and Arizona's Simon Burnett on 1:31.20 at the 2006 NCAA Championships.
