Dec 13, 2013  - Fabio Terrone

HERINING - Mireia Belmonte has set the European record in the 200 metres butterfly on the opening day of the European short-course swimming championships in the Danish city of Herning. The Spanish swimmer won yesterday's final in 2:01.52 and shaved 0.66 off the previous mark held by Hungary's Hosszu and set just a year ago at the SC Worlds. European record evolution (Time, Name/Nationality, Place, Date): 2:01.52 Mireia Belmonte ESP Herning 12.12.13 2:02.20 Katinka Hosszu HUN Istanbul 12.12.12 2:03.01 Mireia Belmonte ESP Castellón 26.11.09 2:03.53 Jedrzejczak Otylia POL Debrecen 13.12.07 2:04.94 Jedrzejczak Otylia POL Helsinki 07.12.06 2:05.77 Mehlhorn Annika GER Valencia 14.12.00 According to new swimming governing body rules, Denmark and Russia set a couple of new record in the relay events. The Danish team won the women's 4x50 freestyle in 1:37.04 while Russia won the men's 200m medley relay in 1:32.38, although the European records for these events are 1:33.25 (set by The Netherlands) and 1:31.80 (Russia) respectively. Both record times were set in december 2009 before technical swimsuits were banned by FINA, effective after December 31st, 2009 [NOTE the strange thing is that FINA didn't erase all records achieved during polyurethane era].
