Rome 2009: Day 3

Men's 50m breaststroke heats:

Cameron van der Burgh (RSA) led the way in the heats of the 50m breaststroke with a championship record of 26.92 ahead of Felipe Silva (BRA), on 27.12, and Brenton Rickard (AUS), world 100m champion in 58.58 last night, on 27.15.

Rome 2009:
  • Top 16 through: 26.92 - 27.43
  • Inside 27: 1
  • Inside 27.3: 11
  • Inside 27.5: 16
  • Inside 28: 39
And in the time of Dinosaurs:
Melbourne 2007:
  • Top 16 through: 27.49 - 28.25
  • Inside 27: 0
  • Inside 27.3: 0
  • Inside 27.5: 1
  • Inside 28: 7

Just seven inside 28sec and just 3 did that in finals; compared to 39 in Rome heats.

Ven der Burgh went through to semis at the helm back in Melbourne too. The final, in which the South African newcomer took bronze behind Oleg Lisogor (UKR) and Brendan Hansen (USA) saw three men get below 28sec. Lisogor's winning 27.66sec would have finished

27th in the Rome heats.
