Aug 2, 2009  - Craig Lord

Rome 2009, Day 8

Women's 400m medley

Katinka Hosszu (HUN) set a European record of 4:30.31 to win the last individual title of the 13th world championships ahead of the Olympic gold and silver medallists. Silver went to Kirsty Coventry (ZIM), in 4:32.12, with Olympic champion Stephanie Rice (AUS) third in 4:32.29. Just locked out of the medals was Hannah Miley (GBR), on 4:32.72, having lost her European standard to the Hungarian winner.

Where just one woman got below 4:40 in 2007, all eight finalists did that in 2009, and five of those went below 4:35.
