Men's 50 Free Final Tied Up

Men's 50m freestyle

Brazilian sprinter Cesar Cielo was the man to beat as defending Olympic and world champion in the event. In heat one he was challenged by Cullen Jones (USA) swimming next to him in lane 3 - they created a solid wall of speed together to tie for the win in 21.54. Cullen's teammate Anthony Ervin - joint Olympic champion with Gary Hall Jr. in Sydney in 2000 - touched in third in 21.62.

Eamon Sullivan (AUS) was fourth in 21.88.

Heat 2 pitted the fastest morning qualifier George Bovell of Trinidad against sprint guru Roland Schoeman (RSA) and Bruno Fratus (BRA) - the Frenchman touched him out in 21.63 to Bovell's 21.77, with Florent Manaudou - also of France - touchiing third in 21.80.

The final lines up for Friday with ties at both ends - Cielo and Jones leading the field and Sullivan and Schoeman locking it with a tie for 7th.

Locked out of the top 8 was Magnussen 22.00 (6th in his heat - 11th over all).

Canada's Brent Hayden tied for 14th in 22.12 with Ukraine's Andrii Govorov.
